FTW Movie 2009 1

In an era of shameless sequels, spin-offs and remakes, original materials are beginning to look more and more sarce however, every so often, a certain movie without original content is repackaged so marvelously that it recreates the mythical magical impact its predescessor did. Where Dragonball: Evolution failed painfully in 2009, Star Trek emerged triumphant.

I was never a Star Trek fan. The only thing I knew about the USS Enterprise was that there was a weird dude called Spock. The initial news of JJ Abrams remaking Star Trek last August didn't invoke the slightest reaction in me.

All changed when I saw their first trailer. It was then when my expectations for this film was raised to another level. My expectations for it was violated again yesterday when the film exceeded anything I thought was possible from this geek show.

From an objective perspective, Star Trek was really stimulating. It reeked of JJ Abrams. The direction style is unique.
Despite being well-polised in terms of colour and lighting, Abram gave this film a very raw feel. Every scene, be it a static of moving one, involved very subtle camera 'vibrations'. These camera shakes were not done forcefully but gently and delicately, adding a sense of chaos/ fatigue to the piece, reinforcing the fact that the crew are in the smack middle of a war.

Casting were brilliant too. I am not position to compare old with new; however, I must say that each character brought out their plot niche. There was minimal celebrity calefare. I assume that Abram was riding on the fanbase's certainty that Kirk will become captain, and that establised hope alone becomes a powerful plot device that drives Kirk's on-sceen confidence.
Some fans may argue that the new Spock seem to struggle keeping his emotions in, and is much less robotic than the original. But given the contextual plot of the movie, this is the very conflicted Spock the script called for.

John Cho and Simon Pegg were slightly awkward. Cho was slightly too suave for Dr.Zulu whileSimon Pegg's character was too eager to share himself with the audience.

Special Effects of Star Trek were great. But sadly, it would be outdone by Transformers. But nevertheless, Lighting was eye-popping. The constant use of multiple lense flares during long takes really conveyed the sense of being on board a sparkling new USS enterprise.

In summary, I would definitely consider Star Trek as one of the FTW movies of 2009 for the simple reason that it makes me want to be a star trek fan.
